Digital Forensics

Find what the data actually says.

Digital evidence decides cases, but only when it is collected, analyzed and explained correctly. We analyze digital evidence to uncover the facts, including the investigation of cybersecurity incidents to support vulnerability mitigation, and forensic examination in the litigation and eDiscovery context.

Nearly every dispute and investigation today turns on digital artifacts: a deleted message, a login from an unexpected location, a file copied to a personal drive the night before a resignation. Finding those artifacts is only half the job. They must be preserved in a way that survives challenge, interpreted accurately, and explained in terms a judge, jury, regulator or board can follow.

Our digital forensics practice combines legal judgment with technical examination. Because we understand how evidence will be used, from a demand letter to a Daubert challenge, we scope and document each examination with the end use in mind. That means defensible acquisition, repeatable methods, clear chain of custody and findings that are precise about what the data does and does not show.

We work with companies, individuals and outside counsel on investigations that range from a single mobile device to enterprise networks and cloud platforms.

Capabilities

What we handle

A closer look at the digital forensics work we take on for clients.

01

Network & server forensics

Examination of logs, servers and network artifacts to reconstruct access, movement and data transfer.

02

Database forensics

Analysis of database records, audit trails and transaction histories to establish what changed, when and by whom.

03

Mobile device forensics

Acquisition and analysis of phones and tablets, including messages, call logs, location data and application artifacts.

04

Cyber incident investigation

Root cause analysis after a breach or intrusion to support containment, vulnerability mitigation and legal obligations.

05

Computer fraud & abuse assessment

Evaluation of unauthorized access and misuse to support claims, defenses and internal decisions.

06

Expert witness testimony

Clear written reports and testimony that explain technical findings and withstand cross-examination.

07

Departing employee investigations

Review of devices and accounts for data exfiltration, trade secret misuse and policy violations.

08

Chain of custody & reporting

Documentation that supports admissibility, from intake and hashing through final reporting.

Method

Our approach

01

Preserve

Defensible acquisition and chain of custody from the first hour.

02

Analyze

Methodical, repeatable examination that stands up to scrutiny.

03

Explain

Clear findings a judge, jury or board can act on.

FAQ

Common questions

Can deleted data be recovered?+

Often, but not always. Recovery depends on the device, operating system, encryption, how much time has passed and how the device has been used since. An early, careful acquisition gives the best chance of recovery.

Should we turn off or reset a device we suspect was misused?+

No. Do not power cycle, reset, or browse the device. Isolate it, note who has had access to it, and contact a forensic examiner. Well-meaning self-investigation is one of the most common ways evidence is altered.

Will forensic findings be admissible in court?+

Admissibility depends on the court and the rules that apply, but documented acquisition methods, hash verification and a clean chain of custody are the foundation. We build every engagement to support that.

How long does an examination take?+

A focused review of a single device can take days; enterprise investigations can take weeks. We scope the work at the outset so you know what to expect.

Can you work under the direction of our attorneys?+

Yes. Forensic work is frequently performed at the direction of counsel, which can help protect the work product. We coordinate closely with legal teams.
